AWS Storage Options for Optimal Performance

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)


Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) is a low-latency block device storage option. Thanks to high availability in the same availability zone, component failure won’t cause data loss. In addition, Amazon EBS volumes are available for each type of drive, including solid-state drives (SSD) and magnetic hard disk drives (HDD).


The magnetic storage Throughput Optimised HDD ( st1 ) option can provide low-cost and high-capacity instances for workloads with moderate throughput and light or burst I/O requirements.


On average, EBS is designed to deliver roughly 100 input/output operations per second (IOPS) with provisioned IOPS to deliver performance for I/O intensive workloads and support for a maximum of 2,000 IOPS per provisioned IOPS volume. If you require storage for backup, archival or light streaming media applications, EBS is an ideal choice. However, the native latency and multi-tenancy means that it is not recommended for transactional workloads.


Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)


Amazon S3 is designed to provide scalable storage in the cloud It is most often used for storing and distributing static web content and media. S3 provides ideal performance for disaster recovery solutions involving secure backup and archival of critical business data. S3 is designed with server-side latencies that are insignificant in comparison to web latencies. Built to scale, it can support an almost unlimited number of web applications.


AWS Import/Export


AWS Import/Export is a solution for large volume data transfers and can be used to transfer data to Amazon S3 or Amazon Glacier. It is capable of loading data at more than 100 MB per second.


AWS Storage Gateway


Amazon Storage Gateway provides integration between your company’s on-premise IT environment and Amazon’s storage infrastructure. Optimising the performance of AWS Storage Gateway will depend on the amount of local storage allocated to the gateway virtual machine, network bandwidth between the Amazon S3, the gateway virtual machine, and iSCSI initiator, and local disks speed and configuration.


Amazon Glacier


Amazon Glacier is designed for data backup and archival. As a solution for backup only, it is not recommended for real-time access or rapidly changing data. On average, backup tasks can take 3-5 hours to complete.
